New Postpartum Guidelines by ACOG Benefiting YOU

New Postpartum Guidelines by ACOG Benefiting YOU

The Fourth Trimester is definitely on the horizon! All I can say is YAY.  ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) came out with New Postpartum Guidelines in May 2018. Have you seen them?! This is a wonderful start, bringing more awareness to this immeasurable time. The new guidelines emphasize mind and body health and should be an ongoing process rather than a one time visit. ACOG recommends all women should be seen within the first 3 weeks of giving birth and then again in 6 - 12 weeks. The 3 week visit is to touch base with you to see how motherhood is treating you, how your mood is, see how you are healing and discuss any questions or concerns you have. So if your provider says “see you at your 6 week postpartum visit,” discuss a 3 week visit with them. You can plan ahead in pregnancy and ask your provider at a prenatal visit how many weeks after baby is born will you have your postpartum visit. Since these are relatively new guidelines, not all providers may be following them yet.

Side note: Research has shown many women don’t know who to contact in the Fourth Trimester. Before leaving the hospital be sure to know how to get a hold of your healthcare team and put that number in your phone under contacts :) Remember, your healthcare team is always a phone call away and someone is always on-call 24/7.
