3 Words to Know about Leading you into Motherhood + Fatherhood + Birth of your Babe

3 Words to Know about Leading you into Motherhood + Fatherhood + Birth of your Babe

  1. Effacement

  2. Dilation

  3. Engagement

Effacement: Ok so your cervix! Typically about 2-3 cm thick️. It will become stretchy thin like a rubber band as you contract + baby’s head compresses down. We measure effacement by percentages, and ultimately we like your cervix to be 100% effaced aka 100% thinned out. You may hear your provider talk about effacement after each cervical exam

Dilation: This one is prob a little more familiar sounding. So we need your cervix to dilate to 10 cm to reach the end of labor. 10 cm is approx. the width of a big grapefruit. 5-6 cm (halfway there) is approx size of the width of a beefsteak tomato

Engagement: So we are counting on the babe for this one. And the shape of your pelvis also plays a big role in this tooSo engagement is how baby is moving down into your pelvis. We reference engagement by station. So when baby is engaged in the pelvis baby is at 0 station. When baby has passed 0 station baby is +1 +2 or +3, we can start pushing at this time. If baby isn’t engaged yet, baby is -1,-2 or -3 station. We have tricks in labor to get baby to in the +1,+2 stations (secret: ask for a peanut ball)
